Windows 7 SP1 Build 7601.16502.100208-1500 Leaked Screenshots
Written by wbg friend

Beta reportedly planned for mid-April

The first service pack for Windows 7 is reportedly on track to graduating to Beta stage in mid-April 2010.

Microsoft, of course, has yet to make public any details on the first major upgrade for its latest Windows client, let alone disclose the timetable, or the launch deadline. However, one third-party source, which so far has had no credibility problems, reveals that the Redmond company has been producing Windows 7 SP1 interim builds on a steady basis, albeit they are all used for dogfooding (internal testing).

Russian website Wzor indicates that Microsoft is currently up to Windows 7 SP1 Build 7601.16518.100302-1530, the last Build compiled in early March 2010 in the winmain_sp branch. At the same time, 7601.16502.100208-1500 is mentioned among the Builds compiled in February 2010, and now screenshots allegedly from the release have been leaked. (via GeekSmack)

Users will be able to view the screenshots included at the bottom of this article to get a taste of Windows 7 SP1 Build 7601.16502.100208-1500. However, even with the leaked screenshots, there is little actual information of SP1 or of what it will contain. However, the promise seems to be that users will get a chance to try Windows 7 SP1 Build 7601.16502.100208-1500 for themselves, but only illegally.

The source of the leaked screenshots noted that Build 7601.16502.100208-1500 had been slated to be leaked in the immediate future. So far, the bits are not available from illegal third-party sources, and certainly not form Microsoft. At the same time, the software giant isn’t really expected to offer early adopters Windows 7 SP1 for testing until the Beta development milestone. This is, however, another piece of unconfirmed expectations, and more a case of “fingers crossed” than anything else.

The reality is mid-April might bring with it the first public details, and possibly a release of Windows 7 SP1, but Microsoft has said nothing in this regard. At the same time, any illegal releases come with inherent risks, including malware infections, credit card-data loss, and identity theft, and are not recommended in the least.

Die IE6! DIE!!!
Written by Adrian Kingsley-Hughes
Saturday, 27 February 2010 11:03

It’s time for IE6 to die. Seriously. The funeral’s been arranged for March 1st, yet about 20% of the web still use this wretched browser.

Internet Explorer Six, resident of the interwebs for over 8 years, died the morning of March 1, 2010 in Mountain View, California, as a result of a workplace injury sustained at the headquarters of Google, Inc. Internet Explorer Six, known to friends and family as “IE6,” is survived by son Internet Explorer Seven, and grand-daughter Internet Explorer Eight.

As much as I’d like March 1st to be the last day that people browse the web with this browser, that’s not how it’s going to be. Despite being horribly out of date, people still use it.

Let’s play the blame game. Who’s to blame? Well, a lot of people are:

  • Microsoft: Every single XP CD or DVD sold by Microsoft, right up to its demise, contained IE6. While users could rely on service packs to update the OS, the browser didn’t get an upgrade.
  • Enterprise: For building houses of cards on top of the browser with no thought for the future.
  • Web developers: For spending too many years making IE support paramount.

The problem with IE6 isn’t so much that it’s not dead, because functionally it is, but that it lives in a zombie-like state on too many systems, either because people aren’t aware of the risks of using it (if you work for a company like that, make sure to keep your resume up to date), or they enjoy playing Russian Roulette with their systems.

My guess is that for as long as Windows XP remains relevant (and remember that through XP Mode on Windows 7, Microsoft has given the OS a reprieve), we’ll still be talking about IE6.

The biggest Pirate of Windows 7 revealed

Millions of copies sold per hour

A survey carried out by software giant Microsoft revealed the best place to buy pirated copies of their Windows 7 operating system. It turns out that Moscow is the biggest Windows 7 pirate ever, and that more than 25 percent of the dealers in the city sold pirated copies of the software. Also, one in ten of the dealer come to your house and install it for you. Not much different from India then. Microsoft has surveyed 2500 computer and software retailers in 53 cities across the Russian Federation. The Far Eastern part of Russia shames China and India when it comes to software piracy, with places like Yekaterinburg recording 41 percent pirated sales, Chelyabinsk 30 percent and Moscow 27 percent. However Moscow wins the pirate game due to the sheer volume of the Win 7 DVDs sold. And according to Yuri Zlobin, the head of the anti-piracy association, "The Russian Shield", it was a lot worse than that in Moscow. Also, the numbers reported are still less than the actuals. Incidentally, Russia has the second-largest market for pirated products after China. As we reported earlier, China is doling out gratuitous amounts of copies of Windows 7 on USB drives. The pen drive is being sold for a paltry 98 yuan, or about $14 (Rs 670). What's more, the USB drive features Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's signature on the outside. Pirated copies in DVD format of the new operating system continue to be sold openly in many malls and markets in China. You can get a pirated copy of Windows 7 (non-beta presumably) for 20 yuan (which is about $3 bucks). Windows 7 is cheapest in China, and is available for a paltry $58, and inspite of that most folks prefer to opt for the pirated deal of $3. Although China isn't the only nation pirating Windows 7, India has followed suit and the pirates are selling the OS for as little as Rs 500 ($10) and those in Philippines are selling it for $1.5. While Windows Vista was widely pirated as well, Windows XP remains the most illegally distributed Operating System of all time.

Office 2010 GA (General Availability) on June 15 2010
Written by wbg Friend

Microsoft announced its plans for Office 2011 for the Mac, which it says will ship by the end of 2010. Office 2010 for Windows, meanwhile, will become generally available June 15, 2010. GA or General Availability means that RTM should be at least a month before that, but I expect even 2 months, mentions Paul Thurrott in WinInfo Short Takes Week of February 15, 2010. According to company insiders, the software giant plans to Release to Manufacturing (RTM) Office 2010 by the end of March/early April. Neowin questioned Microsoft on Thurrott's statement and a Microsoft spokesperson would only confirm "we expect Office 2010 and related products to be generally available in June 2010." Microsoft earlier this month, released the release Candidate Builds of Microsoft Office 2010 client (build 4734.1000) and server products (build 4730.1010) to Technology Adoption Program (TAP) testers. In an email, the Office team thanked testers, "as a valued Technical Beta participant, you play an important role in preparing Office 2010 for the rest of the world! We thank you for your continued participation, feedback, and hard work."

Microsoft planning new Windows 7 piracy check
Written by Tom Warren
Saturday, 13 February 2010 20:38

Microsoft said on Thursday that it plans to release a Windows Activation Technologies Update for Windows 7
that will detect 70 known activation exploits
The update will be distributed on Microsoft's Genuine Windows site on February 16 and will be available from the Microsoft Downloads Center on February 17. Joe Williams, Manager of Microsoft's Genuine Windows team, confirmed the update will also be offered through Windows Update as an ‘Important’ update later this month

Williams stressed that the update is voluntary and will not jeopardize users privacy. "Although the update contacts Microsoft’s servers to check for new threats...these checks do not include any personally identifiable information" he added.

The update will check for 70 known activation exploits. If any activation exploits are found users will be notified their copy is not genuine and the desktop wallpaper will be switched to a plain black desktop. Periodic reminders and a persistent desktop watermark will also remind users that their copy is not genuine.
