wannabegeek and the 64 bit experience.AMD64

I don’t know about you but I have been wondering what all this talk about  64 bit systems and what are the benefits and exactly what does it all mean.

Well I’ve done a ton of research and even more wondering and I thought we need to give this a go, I had a university pal who bought some 64 bit stuff in 2004 he seemed to fail miserably with a faulty motherboard and difficult SATA drive, he had a bad experience getting his money back. Oh tales of woe

But technology is moving on and we as wannabegeek’s have to up there, haven't we?

The story goes like this, I have a system which is not bad, not amazing but pretty much good enough for every thing, I will publish detail of both old and new systems as we progress.

My partner Christine is not a geek or even a wannabegeek, she thinks all this stuff is for nerds and that I must be one as well, this may be true as I really do aspire to be a geek, but really she is as good as gold and only complains on a regular basis, and as she is frequently ignored and taken for granted this her right. But I have to put the 64 bit experience down to her, in Christine’s attempt to be romantic with a gesture of what I can only describe as over generous she bought me an expensive wallet from the airport where she works. That’s nice I here you say and indeed it was, but this over zealous gesture was compounded by the inclusion of a crisp new £100 note ($185), well what can a wannabegeek buy with that if not computer parts.

Well there you have it in a nutshell it’s not my fault that I shall spend the next few weeks furiously writing articles and “wasting my time fiddling with computers”

So what I hope to put together here is a small diary of my experience with an 64 bit system and see if we can overclock it like the experts do. I have found a review with almost the same parts so we can compare, what we won’t be able to do is the manufacturer comparisons but we can have lots of fun doing the rest.

What I’ve got is all the product info a lot of badly taken photos and some screen dumps to show how we get along.
