Many of you may have recently installed the long awaited Vista SP1 RC . Well some of you have told me that it can leave the evaluation watermark that was common to the Vista public released beta's of summer 06 and later, well here's a way of removing it, it will go anyway when the release of SP1 happens but if you find it annoying do this
1. Go to your 'C:\Windows\System32\xy-XY' directory and locate user32.dll.mui (Where C:\ is the drive you installed Vista on, and 'xy-XY' is the folder corresponding to your language: en-US for English, fr-FR for French, de-DE for german, etc)
2. Right-click user32.dll.mui and select Properties. Go to the Security tab and click the 'Advanced' button. Go to the 'Owner' tab and click the 'Edit' button. Select 'Administrators' and click 'Apply'. You have now taken ownership of the file, as Windows will point out to you.
Today, Microsoft made available the public release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate.
Service Pack 1 includes several improvements to the operating system, including stability and performance fixes as well as many new features and enhancements. As with most service packs, this release also includes all updates previously released for the operating system.
The service pack can be downloaded via Microsoft Download Center or via Windows Update after applying a system patch (see links below).
As this is a pre-release, there is an evaluation period. If you install the service pack, it will expire after June 30th, 2008. However, the final version of Service Pack 1 is expected to be released in January.
Note: If you are running a 64-Bit edition of Windows Vista, the service pack can only be downloaded from Windows Update.
Need a free copy of Windows Vista Ultimate? Are you incredibly trusting of big corporations? Well I have the deal for you, with a new program through Microsoft called the Windows Feedback Program. For the small price of privacy and perhaps some dignity, you can let Microsoft watch your every move for 3 months, in return for some software of your choice. Surveys are also required, one at the start, and then another in 2 week intervals, but compared to the bigger issue those are pretty painless. Some might find this to be an excellent deal, with software prices high, and cost of your free time to be almost nothing at all.
